GRAMS Silk is a nonabsorbable, sterile, surgical suture composed of an organic protein called fibroin. The protein is derived from the continuous filament which is spun by the silkworm larvae in making its cocoon. The raw material is processed to remove natural waxes and gums before braiding to obtain a tighter and more compact braid. The product is generally dyed black for easy visibility in the tissue, then impregnated and coated with a mixture of waxes or silicone. GRAMS Silk meets all requirements established by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) for nonabsorbable surgical suture.
